 Dr. Robert L. Groat has been serving the greater Greensboro community since 1975. His two sons, Dr. Christopher L. Groat & Dr. R. Scott Groat, are now with the practice, along with Dr. Sandy Thimmappa Cohen.

Robert L. Groat MD

About Dr. Robert

Robert L. Groat, MD is a graduate of Greensboro Senior High School (now Grimsley) (’62), Davidson College and Harvard Medical School. He performed an internal medicine internship at Duke University Medical Center and his ophthalmology residency at Washington University Medical School (Barnes Hospital) in St. Louis, Missouri.

His practice has evolved from one including pediatric procedures, eyelid procedures, dacryocystorhinostomies and corneal transplants to now primarily devoted to glaucoma and cataract surgery. He has seen the step-by-step progression of cataract surgery from large-incision surgery with months of recovery, followed by thick glasses, to current techniques with premium intraocular lenses.

He was the Chief of Ophthalmology at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital from 1986-1994. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the North Carolina Medical Society and the Greater Greensboro Society of Medicine. He has also worked with children for the McIver and Gateway schools.

Christopher Groat MD

About Dr. Chris

Areas of Specialty include comprehensive ophthalmology, glaucoma, eyelid surgery. Dr. Groat earned his medical degree from St. George’s University. He did his internship with the Transition Year Program at West Virginia University and his residency at West Virginia University where he was Chief Resident. Professional associations include American Academy of Ophthalmology and NC Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He holds a certificate from the American Board of Ophthalmology. Chris has two boys and enjoys pottery, fishing, and cooking.

Scott Groat MD

About Dr. Scott

Dr. Scott Groat is a native of Greensboro and a graduate of Greensboro Day School. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Davidson College in 2002 with a major in psychology. After college, he moved to Texas with his wife, Elizabeth, where he worked for several years as a personal trainer before ultimately deciding to pursue a career in medicine. He attended medical school at the University of Texas San Antonio, where he achieved his medical degree in 2011. He subsequently spent a year at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he worked as an ophthalmology research fellow.

He completed his internship at Kettering Medical Center as a transitional year resident in 2013, and he went on to complete his ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas at Houston in 2016.

He provides comprehensive ophthalmology services including cataract and glaucoma surgery, oculoplastics, various laser procedures, and contact lens fitting. After 14 years in Texas, Dr. Groat is happy to be back in his hometown of Greensboro. He is joined by his wife Elizabeth, an elementary school teacher, and his three young children, Allison, Charlott and Jacob.

Sandy Thimmappa Cohen MD FAAO

About Dr. Sandy

Dr. Cohen is a fellowship-board certified trained cornea specialist since 2002. She specializes cornea infections, pterygiums, corneal disorders, and contact lens related issues with the cornea. She holds a certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology and has been in practice at Groat Eyecare Associates in Greensboro, North Carolina since 2006. Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Greensboro Society of Medicine, North Carolina Medical Society, North Carolina Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons and a member of the Guild of Family Services of Greensboro.

Dr. Cohen graduated Phi Beta Kappa, with a B.S. in Biology from Emory University in 1993. She continued her education by attending the Medical College of Virginia, where she became a member of the AOA Honor society and received her M.D. degree. In 2002 she concluded her training at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, which has consistently ranked as one of the top eye hospitals in the nation. Dr. Cohen completed both her Ophthalmology Residency & her Cornea Fellowship at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Dr. Cohen is married and has 2 teenage boys. When Dr. Cohen is not in the office, she spends her time cooking, traveling and participating in school activities and lacrosse games with her children.

About Albert

Albert Lundquist, a Florida native, is a Surgeon Assistant and Physician Assistant who has lived and practiced in Greensboro since 1987. He received his undergraduate degree with double majors in Biology and Chemistry from Berry College near Rome, Georgia and completed his training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Medicine and Allied Health Surgeon Assistant Program. Mr. Lundquist joined Groat Eyecare Associates in June 2019, having practiced in ophthalmic surgery and ophthalmology since 1984, at St. Luke’s Eye Institute in Tarpon Springs, FL and for Central Carolina Surgical Eye Associates and Digby Eye Associates, both in Greensboro. He is both specifically trained in surgery and certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Albert and his wife, Julie, enjoy spending time with their two adult children and traveling. With a love of being outdoors, he is happiest watching the 22 species of wild birds he attracts, houses and feeds, including hand feeding live meal worms to Eastern bluebird parents for them to feed to their hatchlings and fledglings. Albert also enjoys fly fishing in North Carolina mountain streams and baking luscious cheesecakes.
